Worship and Word
June 14, 2012There are times when I feel desperate to know God’s will in a situation — to hear His voice clearly, and receive some sort of direction from Him. Can you relate? This feels especially true around high school graduation when everyone has an opinion of what you should do and where you should go. It’s so important to be able to hear the Lord and find out what HE wants for your life. In the middle of all the noise, it’s vital to spend time with Him every day. That’s how we best learn to hear His voice.
“The Sovereign Lord has given me His words of wisdom, so that I know how to comfort the weary. Each morning He awakens me and opens my understanding to His will.” Isaiah 50:4
This scripture is what we are all about in Awakening School of Ministry. We are so fired up about being a people who read our Bibles EVERY DAY. We don’t do this to check it off a list, but to get in His presence, to be transformed, and to receive the wisdom and will of God for each of us, every day! If it’s not for HIM, then why are we even HERE?
Every morning we gather together in the sanctuary of our church to do something we call “Worship and Word”. Picture this with me: worship music playing, students and staff spread out across the sanctuary, reading the Word, Life Journaling, praying, worshiping, walking, kneeling. After an hour or so, we’ll come together with a guitar and djembe (drum) for a bit more worship. We take time to group up and share with each other what the Lord is speaking to each of us that day, and are often in awe by the themes He weaves through each our journal entries. Then we pray together for His will for the day.
God wants to give us His wisdom; it’s His will for us to use His words to comfort the weary. He’s calling us to reach outside the walls of the church to bring His word and wisdom to our city. As we come into His presence each morning, we are asking Him to awaken us and open our understanding to His will. But we will not be equipped to do this if we don’t get into His presence and His Word every day.
So here is a challenge for you: commit to read your Bible every day over this next week. Put a reminder in your phone, on your bathroom mirror, next to your bed, etc. — wherever you will see it and do it. If you don’t know where to begin, follow the Life Journal plan like we do (you can find it at www.lifejournal.cc (http://www NULL.lifejournal NULL.cc)). If you continue this, you can create a habit that I guarantee will change your life! You will begin to hear God speak like you never have before! God WANTS to speak to you — you just have to take the time to listen. Getting into His Word is a pretty great place to start. If you miss a day, don’t beat yourself up about it; just jump right back in. And make sure you have a journal handy, because when He begins to speak, you won’t want to forget it!
